An Overview of the Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is the most popular dog in the United States with its gentle temperament and lively personality. This breed of dog has so much to offer its owners from the way they love companionship to their docile nature that makes them the perfect household pet.

The Shih Tzu is an ancient breed that has been dated back to 600 A.D. The name Shih Tzu means “lion dog” in Chinese. Other names the Shih Tzu has been known as includes the Lhasa Lion Dog, Chinese Lion Dog, the Chrysanthemum-Faced Dog and the Chrysanthemum Dog. The Shih Tzu was accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1969 as a member of the Toy Group. This toy dog is one of the most popular companion dogs.

Originally, the Shih Tzu became the loveable companions of Chinese Imperials. Shih Tzus are a cross between ancient Chinese and Tibetan breeds. Some people believe that the dog that followed Buddha on his mission happens to be none other than the Shih Tzu. Unfortunately, in 1949, these royal dogs almost became extinct during the Chinese Revolution. Thankfully, that did not happen which has allowed many owners to enjoy the companionship of this loveable dog throughout history and in current times.

Depending upon what type of Shih Tzu you have depends upon the size. Either way, this toy dog is compact and solid. A mature Shih Tzu can grow to 9 to 10 ½ inches, but no less than 8 inches or more than 11 inches, and weigh between 9 and 16 pounds. The average life span of a Shih Tzu is between 11 to 15 years. Shih Tzus happen to be longer than they are taller. These toy dogs have a round head along with a rich beard and mustache. People refer to the Shih Tzu as having a “chrysanthemum” face due to the hair above the nose growing upwardly. This breed has large and wide set round eyes that are mostly dark colored. The Shih Tzu has a short, squared muzzle with a heavy under bite which happens to be a signature characteristic of the breed. Their ears are pendant shaped and covered in hair that makes them blend into the body. These dogs also possess a long, thick, double coat that covers their entire body.

Personality wise, these dogs happen to be anything but fierce and ferocious which make them the perfect pet. The Shih Tzu happens to be the best all-around breed since they can live in any sized home, are excellent for families, single people or the elderly alike, get along well with other household pets and happen to be well-behaved. These little love bugs are fairly easy to train since they are also intelligent. Overall, most people describe this breed as being like a teddy bear since they love to cuddle.
