Popular Designer Dog Breeds

If you have been following the latest trends and changes in dog breeding you may have come across the term “Designer Dogs”.

These are, in fact, simply mixed breeds that are crossed to produce a specific physical appearance, usually easily identified as a cross between the two breeds. The breeders attempt to include only the desirable traits of the two parents while minimizing the chance of physical or health issues between the cross.

Some of the more common or popular designer dogs are:

Labradoodle :
A cross between a Labrador retriever and a Standard Poodle. Considered to have the non-shedding and easy care coat of a poodle combined with the poodle’s intelligence and the wonderful, loving personality of the Lab.

Porkie :
A cross between a Pug and a Yorkie. A small dog that is heartier than the standard Yorkie with longer hair and the easygoing temperament of the Pug.

Cockapoo :
A cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Often considered an intelligent, low shedding small breed that is great for families.

Schnoodle :
Cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle, again with an attempt to have an intelligent, non-shedding companion dog.

Daisy Dog :
A three way cross between a poodle and Shih Tzu parent and a Bichon. These dogs are reported to be very calm and excellent companion dogs for traveling or living in small spaces.

Poogle :
Cross between a Poodle and a Beagle. Small sized dog that energetic and easy to train.

Puggle :
Pug and a Beagle. These are very friendly dogs that love to be involved in all aspects of the family.

Most of the designer dogs have a poodle in the mix simply because poodles are know to be excellent non-shedding dogs and also are very intelligent. The three different sizes of poodles also make them a great breed for mixing with various dog breeds.

It is important to remember that these crosses have occurred in the past; it is just now that they are being recognized. As with all breeds of dogs there are good breeding dogs and dogs that should not be crossed due to health conditions or temperaments.

A designer dog, also called a hybrid, is not recognized by the Kennel Clubs, although many agencies are trying to develop registries for these breeds. Be aware that many of these dogs are more expensive than either one of their purebred parents, but do not have any standing with breed registries. Many shelter dogs are mixed breeds that are looking for a loving home and are available at a fraction of the cost that some breeders are asking.

Designer dogs may also have a variety of health concerns and conditions. Do not mistakenly believe that all hybrids are naturally healthy and immune from genetic conditions, in fact they may have just as many health concerns as purebred dogs. Be sure to check the temperament of the parents, and choose a breed that is one you really want, not just the “trendy” dog of the day.

    Why are designer breeds popular?
I just read a question that said "selling the puppies won’t be a problem as designer breeds are so popular"!!!

Why are they popular and why DON’T I have an urge to invest in one?

Because a lot of people buy dogs for the wrong reasons, like the way they look as opposed to their temperaments.

Because people are ignorant and want "whats popular". All designer dogs are mutts,so why doesn’t someone go to a shelter and SAVE A LIFE instead of making puppy mills lots of money. Breeders who breed designer dogs aren’t "real" breeders and arent responsible at all, they dont care about the welfare of the dog just to make a quick 400-1000 bucks.

You don’t have an urge because maybe youre smart?
It’s sad how many people think those dogs are so hip and trendy, they aren’t any different from a shelter dog who needs a home more than anything. They end up there not knowing what they did to get there and their futures are very slim, and thats the sad part.

FYI alot of designer dogs have health problems, they aren’t any healthier than the next breed or mutt! As of we have no use for "working dogs",we might not use them for work but for pets and companions and they are well tempered. So thats Bs,it has nothing to do with those things, all mutts and purebreds alike have those common good traits. I bet the people voting thumbs down are the people who own "designer dogs" or want one

One reason designer breeds are popular is because one reason is that because of dog shows…a dog has to be a purebred to be in dogshows so most purebreed breeds are naturally popular.

Also because of one word. Money. People think just because some breeds are SO expensive that they are SO cool. Thus more and more people buy them in order to have the "most popular" pet. Which, unfortunately, only makes them more popular.

There are many other reasons as well of course that is just two reasons.

Dogs to alot of people are just like fashion. They come and they go…sad part is we are dealing with a life here….one that we are suppose to raise and take care of until they die. But most people think it is cute to have a puppy…a mutt (designer breed) to people that do not know what a mutt is….lol. They are so wanted due to the fact all the celebrities have them right now….and they are not a good example now are they???? And people that do no research dogs end up with puppies they do not want later..and end up in shelters….sad thing….so sad. You probably don’t have the urge because you are smart enough to realize a dog is for life not just for showing it off…with a nice pretty dress on and a nice pair of patent leather shoes..and a nice stroller to toddle around in…..gag me folks..but yeah for you.

I think it is the cuteness combined with the health.
Most people want dogs that are cute, furry, even tempered, and healthy. The people who want working dogs are a select group that is dwindling fast. You don’t have a need for wolf hunting skills nowdays like they did years past. There isn’t such a great need for hunting dogs in society as there was 100 years ago when people "lived off the land". Society has changed and so has their desire when it comes to pets.
    The market is driving it.

"Designer" dogs are popular because there will always be followers. These are people who do not have the character to know themselves and stand up for things they really believe in. They just go the way of others because it is easy and they want to fit in. These are the same people who wear stupid fad fashions that they pay an arm and a leg for, and the same people who buy a car for prestige and status. They are the same people who marry for money, or find themselves trophy wives.

The reason you don’t have the urge to own one is that you are your own person, and you cannot be swayed by public opinion or silly fads. You reach intelligent decisions, stick to your principles and don’t care if others think you fit in or not.

The desire to "fit in" has ruined many a person who could have been great, if only they realized it is not important to have what Paris Hilton has. It is much more important to be an individual, as we all should be.
